This custom wine cellar which stores 1480 bottles of wine, incorporates many unique elements including quarter round display, diamond bin racks, horizontal waterfall display, wood case storage and table top. The owner wanted to have a rustic appearance, so we chose the ideal wood species for wine racks to blend with it. We are very proud of this new wine cellar in Lompoc California and we want to share this success story with our readers!
Transforming a Simple Room in Sta. Barbara Into a Custom Wine Cellar
Before the project was done on the early part of April, the Santa Barbara wine cellar room was bare and had lots of Sea Smoke wines stored in a simple wine rack. You can also see boxes, wooden cases and maps in that room.
Coastal President, Mr. Jerry Wilson got every detail from the wine manager on what to include and what ways he wanted the bottles to be displayed. The room measures 243 inches wide and 87 inches deep. The ceiling height is 9 feet. After a few days, a computer generated 3D model of their proposed design was made.
The most striking feature of a wine cellar is the beauty of wine racks in it. Coastal transformed the Sea Smoke’s bare room into a functional space and wonderful setting by using Knotty Alder wine racks which created a rustic appearance in the Sea Smoke wine cellar. Our Coastal Custom Wine Cellar designers used different styles of wine racks to accommodate the various sizes of wine bottles our clients wanted to store.
The customized rack at the front (Rack A) features the waterfall display and horizontal display. The waterfall display is a brilliant design to showcase wines. It features individual storage slots in a cascading design, similar to a waterfall. The wine rack also allows full visibility of the wine labels by having a horizontal display. In this way, the owner can find bottles easily without flipping them. The 3-liter and 6-liter bottles need to be stored in this manner as they are too tall to be stored in a standard rack.
There are wood cases for wines and cabinets for storage of wine accessories such as wine glasses and decanters. The perfect finishing touch to this Lompoc wine cellar was the Quarter Round Display placed on both sides of the table top. Quarter Rounds are used to wrap around corners and make the perfect end to any wall. The Quarter Rounds created a “double deep” section that added depth and character to the room. The upper portion of the racks on the front, left and right side of the wall are all single bottle displays which allow storage for individual bottles.
The left and right side of the wall (Rack B) which are both 87 inches deep, are the diamond bin racks which are ideal for odd-shaped bottles and for maximizing storage space. It is also a great way for air to circulate properly in and around the bottles. For the Lompoc CA wine cellar we built the diamond bins at half height, also known as table top height, to fit underneath the windows. These knotty alder racks are also available in full size heights of 6, 7 or 8 ft and can be built with different wood species.
Bringing Rustic Beauty to a Lompoc California Wine Cellar
To go with the rustic theme of the Knotty Alder flooring, Coastal built knotty alder wine racks. Alder is the most commonly used hardwood in the Pacific Northwest. It is almost white when first cut but when exposed to air, it quickly changes its color to light brown with a yellow or peach hues.
Knotty Alder is a lower grade alder which has the strength of maple and the physical characteristics of pine. It has some knot holes and distressed areas in its pattern which gave the flooring and wine racks a very natural look and unique patterns. It also creates a more antique look over time. For an elegant finish, wheat stain and clear lacquer were applied to Knotty Alder custom wine racks in Lompoc California.
The delicious Pinot Noir, grown in our client’s Santa Barbara vineyard, deserved to be displayed in a functional wine storage room. The finished wine cellar stores 1480 bottles of wine, has plenty of storage and table top space to make it functional and has a rustic appearance to match its stunning location. Sea Smoke Cellars were very thankful to Coastal Custom Wine Cellars team because of the topnotch workmanship and fantastic installation job that we did.
